Holding a photograph of his father and his comrades standing proudly by their tank, the boy explains, "He doesn't have a sidekick-he has a platoon." Hardin, a debut author, lucked out with Langdo (Diamond Jim Dandy and the Sheriff): her minimal, confident text is in perfect sync with the khaki and fatigue-hued combat scenes. ![]() This book compares super heroes to US Soldiers One line from the book reads, 'He doesnt wear rocket-propelled boots - he wears Army boots' One of the last lines, especially meaningful for our kids whose parent is deployed, reads, 'Sometimes he has to go away for long trips, but. Again, the shoot for a film like this would be fairly inexpensive since a lot of it takes place on the phone. Suddenly, everybody's life is in danger as what started off as a prank goes horribly awry. Then Deena's half-brother Chuck gets involved and he calls the wrong number. That is the crux of this terrifying tale, when Deena and Jade decide to have some phone fun by calling boys and pretending to be people their not. We've all been called by wrong numbers and chances are we've all made (or been involved) with prank calls in some way. While I’m not in the habit of re-reading books – mostly because book blogging and a huge TBR compel me to look forward rather than back – I decided to make an exception for this first stand-alone novel in Joe Abercrombie’s First Law series: back in 2011 Best Served Cold was my introduction to this author and to the concept of grimdark fantasy (and although I enjoyed it, it took me an unfortunate long time before I read the three books that precede this one) and what this re-read taught me is that, apart from the core concept of the novel, I had practically forgotten the majority of narrative details, so that my drive to re-acquaint myself with the story ended up feeling like a first encounter. ![]() 7/5/2023 0 Comments Bad apple by edward hemingway![]() Despite its attractive artwork and clever puns, it is more than a tad unsettling to see the worm eating through the apple's skin. No one who has studied the growth of global feminism can deny the important work women are doing to ensure our freedom. It is a feminism that recognizes individual diversity, and freedom, and equality, defined through and beyond north/west and south/east dialogues. In Hatreds: Radicalized and Sexualized Conflicts in the 21st Century, Zillah Eisenstein shares the insight:įeminism(s) as transnational - imagined as the rejection of false race/gender borders and falsely constructed 'other' - is a major challenge to masculinist nationalism, the distortions of statist communism and 'free'-market globalism. Mainstream mass media rarely calls attention to these positive interventions. ![]() “Radical feminist work around the world daily strengthens political solidarity between women beyond the boundaries of race/ethnicity and nationality. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a tactic in which individuals claim that a book is “pornographic” or “sexually explicit” to spark outrage and hysteria, even when a book in no way falls anywhere near those categories. Book censorship has been an ongoing problem, but has grown tremendously since 2020, with challenges and bans to books rising by an astonishing 1,100% in the past two years. The most recent round of book bannings highlights the growing attack on romance novels in public libraries, including works from bestselling authors like Nora Roberts and Jodi Picoult. ![]() |
